Ettore Majorana: Das größte Rätsel der Wissenschaft – der Physiker, der 1938 spurlos verschwand

Ettore Majorana: The Greatest Mystery in Science – The Physicist Who Vanished Without a Trace in 1938 Ettore Majorana was one of the greatest physics geniuses of the 20th century. Enrico Fermi placed him on a par with Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton. Majorana worked on the foundations of nuclear physics, developing a theory—still significant today—about particles that could be their own antiparticles, thus continuing to influence modern neutrino research and quantum physics. But his name stands not only for extraordinary scientific progress, but also for one of the most enigmatic disappearances in the history of science. In March 1938, the then 31-year-old Ettore Majorana boarded a ship between Naples and Palermo. Shortly afterward, all trace of him was lost. What happened to the brilliant Italian physicist? Did he commit suicide, withdraw voluntarily from society, hide in a monastery, or begin a completely different life under a new identity? This documentary tells the complete story of Ettore Majorana: from his childhood in Catania, through his work in Enrico Fermi's renowned circle in Rome and his encounters with Werner Heisenberg, to his later withdrawal from public life, his professorship in Naples, and the crucial hours immediately before his disappearance. The focus is on Majorana's last letters, his message to his family, the letter to Professor Antonio Carrelli, the telegram from Palermo, and the conflicting clues that have preoccupied investigators, historians, and biographers for decades. We also examine the most important theories about his fate and compare them with known documents, witness statements, and the chronology of events. Later clues from South America are particularly enigmatic. Decades after Majorana's disappearance, statements and photographs surfaced that led investigators to believe he may have lived for many more years. Subsequent decisions by Italian authorities and courts also brought renewed attention to the case—without definitively solving the historical mystery. Was Ettore Majorana a man who wanted to escape his own fame? Was he afraid of the consequences of modern physics? Or is there a much simpler explanation behind his disappearance? This in-depth documentary reconstructs one of the most fascinating unsolved cases of the 20th century and portrays the life of a researcher whose scientific legacy continues to this day. #EttoreMajorana #Physics #Documentary
