  &quot;Every edition reveals that the backstory of The Lord lf Lies from the previous edition was a lie.&quot; is one of the best ways I&apos;ve every heard it described. And considering that he includes gods in the various backstories that will all claim that the ones they are involved in are true, even the contradictory ones when they appear in both, mames it work even better.<br><br>My personal headcanon is that he is The First Lie. Literally the first manipulation of one creature by another for its own benefit. As such it&apos;s able to create all these fantastic origon stories that all appear to be true at the same time. Because it is the metaphysical embodiment of lying.

  IIRC a justification for the Ruby Rod having a stated value is &quot;the amount of gold you gain is bonus XP&quot; was a common mode of play at the time.

  I like the theory that Ashmodai (Asmodeus) as a fallen angel was devoured by/fused with Ahriman. It gives the angel backstory even more of a tragic punch as he descended into the most evil, and Ahriman a grander sense of power in his capability to manipulate and corrupt; truly, a BBEG

  Crack theory: According to the Rule of 3, everything comes in 3s. There were two serpents in that myth, which begs the question: Where&apos;s the third? My money is on the Lady of Pain: Sigil is the inside of her body in so perfect an ouroboros nobody can even see where the teeth are.

  My favorite interpretation is simultaneously more cosmic and also more grounded- Nessus <b>is</b> Asmodeus, and those rifts are his wounds. His primacy is based upon the fact that the other eight hells literally rest on top of his body. It gives the hells a wonderfully mind bending sense of scale (after all, the outer planes are infinite, so does that mean Asmodeus&apos;s body is infinite?) and also serves as a wonderful misdirection- with everyone focusing on the ruby rob, nobody sees what&apos;s right beneath their feet.

  In my version Asmodeus is kind of like DnDs Galactus. Each edition of DnD was a real active thing until it ended with the birth of the next edition. Asmodeus is the one of the only creatures to have survived between these changes.

  There is a possibility that many options are compatible: He was the Ahriman, cast down by Jezirian at the origin of the multiverse; while recovering he let other thing rules baator and created ad avatar in the shape of an angel or possessed an angel already existing. He proceeded to make a pact with pazuzu that helped his avatar to eliminate a god to absorb its spark, than during the trial convince the other gods to sign the pact. Once casted away from the gods he continued to use the once angelic avatar to subjugate Hell and banish Zargon...
