McClellan believed himself to be Lincoln's social, intellectual and moral superior. Losing to Lincoln must have been quite the body blow to his persona.

Vallandingham's end was memorable. While discussing the particulars of a trial he was involved in, Vallandingham accidentally shot and killed himself with the murder weapon. "My God, I've shot myself!" Which indeed he had. This all happened at the Golden Lamb Inn in Lebanon, Ohio.
