Both Chard and Pvt Hook mentioned him in written statements as fighting at Rourke's Drift. I'd trust them over an author who made claims without evidence.

Whatever the establishment did or didn't do to tarnish the reputation of Lt Gert Adendorff, the film Zulu made him a central character in the defence of Rourke's drift. He is no longer a forgotten man who survived both battles fought that day!

Having served myself, the probability of the staff looking for a scapegoat seems the highest of all options mentioned... 👍

Chris, I believe you have made your point through overwhelming evidence and as a memeber of the" YouTube Jury" I vote Adendorff was in fact at Rorke's Drift!

I’m on the side that Adendorff was at the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, since accounts from multiple sources confirm his presence, not least by a very meticulous notekeeper (we surely need more of these folks nowadays).

Just goes to show that the best fighters are often the ones who know their way around the bushes, yet their feats are forgotten due to bias towards soldiers in the army, and political machinations within the army shortly after a humiliating defeat.

Thanks to your video, Adendorff’s name is cleared and his feats will live on to those wish to know his tale! Hats off to you good sir!

The most compelling argument is for him being there because he appears in reports from those we know where there. It serves no purpose for those that where there to say he was unless it’s true

Also, according to a book I read, Henry Hook, was badly treated by the film. It incorrectly, portrayed him as a shirker. His daughter, left the film's premiere, before it ended

If British soldiers (including Chard) who were at Rorke’s Drift said that Adendorff was there, then he was there.

As a child, this was my fate film as l got older. l learned the true fate of the men . And l learned that veterans are treated the same today as they were back then . Soldiers are people to be sacrificed for politicians' gains .

Being a combat Marine Corps Veteran of the Vietnam War I am loathe to name any soldier a coward

The fact they're here, not "home abed in England," whilst we stand alone to face an uncertain future speaks volumes to me of every person there. On the spot.

The fog of war is a real circumstance. Once the struggle commences standing orders are strained and only training and personal fiber of strength sets in. Fighting for the men alongside you. They matter.

Back then in 1879, the loud yells, screams, exploding gunpowder and the acrid nostril stinging scent of the discharged smoke ... no time to take note of everyone. Only I.D. the enemy and with reaction training and numbing excitement eliminate all the confirmed enemy in your fevered emotional mind.

This man served there I am convinced. I don't take the word of a long later writer, regardless of all the research.

Gerd, you were there and I shan't doubt your word and Chard's words nor your bravery. Nuff said.

I always remember Adendorff's reply to Bromhead's question, "don't you Afrikaners like our help?"
"Oh we like your help, we are just concerned what you English will want in return."
