The country that built the greatest empire of all time. And which became famous for winning the 2026 World Cup. I invite you now to see the history of Spain. Let's see how it all began. In ancient times, the name Spain had not yet been chosen. Spain means Land of Rabbits. It was the term the Romans used to refer to the entire Iberian Peninsula. Including the territory that is now Portugal. - The Reconquista was the greatest war in the history of the Iberian Peninsula. It lasted seven hundred and seventy years. That's right. Seven hundred and seventy years of conflict. It was longer than Brazil has existed as a country. It was longer than any war humanity has ever seen. And it began in an almost invisible way. Remember when the Muslims conquered the peninsula in 711, a small piece remained in the far north? That hidden corner in the mountains of Asturias? That's where it all began. A Visigothic nobleman named Pelayo was taking refuge in those mountains. He was a survivor of the defeated nobility. In 722, about eleven years after the invasion, a small Muslim force climbed the mountains after him. The Muslims wanted to end that pocket of resistance once and for all. But Pelayo knew the terrain. He took refuge in a cave called Covadonga. And there he set up an ambush. The Battle of Covadonga was small in numbers. Historically, it was more of a skirmish than a large battle. Some historians believe it involved few soldiers on each side. But its symbolism became enormous. Pelayo won. The Muslims retreated. And from there, that little piece of land remained like a stubborn Christian seed, hidden among the mountains. The Kingdom of Asturias was born. It was too small to worry the Muslims. Nobody in Córdoba cared much about it. But it grew. Slowly. Decade after decade. And as it grew, the idea behind it grew stronger and stronger. The idea was simple. The peninsula had been Christian before the invasion. And it needed to be again. This idea was called the Reconquista. In the first centuries, the advance was very slow. A valley here, a city there, a mountain over there. Over time, that Kingdom of Asturias was divided into several independent Christian kingdoms. Kingdom of León. Kingdom of Castile. Kingdom of Navarre. Kingdom of Aragon. And further west, later, the Kingdom of Portugal was born. Each of these kingdoms grew southward in its own way. Each with its own kings, its own armies, its own ambitions. They often fought amongst themselves. In fact, many times a Christian kingdom allied with a Muslim kingdom to attack another Christian kingdom. It wasn't an organized holy war. It was a political mess where religion was just one of the factors.
