My parents were married in 1941, just a couple of months before Pearl Harbor. They eventually returned to my Dad’s family farm, had 5 children (I am the oldest) and were married for 64 years. Things were not always smooth for them. I once asked my Mom how did they manage to keep their marriage intact. She replied that they had to, there was no other option. They came through those rocky times, and their marriage was stronger than ever. A really good lesson for couples today. To my parents commitment was everything.

Because she knew about the shaming, blame, and ostracisim that she would have to endure from family and "friends" that would blame her for not being the perfect, people pleasing wife. She had limited resources and sometimes literally no place to go for help when she was beaten and abused. Good times, weren't they?

I cherish the handwritten index cards with recipes from our mother and aunts and friends. Pulling one out and making that food always helps make a tough day better.

The only thing I can say is that for the first 10 years I think of every marriage in the 1950s, 1960s, 70s and 80s were usually good attempts at making this dream of perfect marriage and family bliss appear to be true, but after 10 years the parents become human or just who they really are and it starts to go downhill b/c ppl are human.

They're lying. Most of those marriages they were mean to each other behind close doors or had open relationships and later were able to joke about it. If you watch PBS old videos on those marriages they weren't perfect and they told what happened. Most of them just stayed miserable in those marriages.
