  The reason you aren’t seeing much is that the highways avoid most of the villages. They were built relatively recently for freight, so just go to main centres.<br><br>Villages tend to be quite small and tight knit based around families. Because it is so agrarian, there isn’t the pull factor to draw the population into cities. Even in large towns, many people will actually live in surrounding villages.<br><br>Lao people still rely on foraged food for much of their protein. But their villages get solid rice harvests due to the heat and the rain. People are food secure (more or less), but they don’t have an excess of production to take to market. Cheap frozen shrimp etc from Thailand is probably holding back a switch to more intensive domestic agriculture.
