You know things are fucked up when first responders are comparing what they saw at Ray's retreat to fucking Jonestown.

Simon, you and your team should cover 'Alpha Male' boot camps; they do something very similar and have occasionally resulted in serious injury or death

Oprah has unleashed and promoted so many grifters over the years. I cannot imagine why ANYONE would listen to anything she has to say ever again.

The amount of times Oprah has created a monster should never be understated.

There used to be an Internet discussion board called "New Age Frauds and Plastic Shamans" that specialized in exposing these people. Obviously, Ray was probably the most dangerous, but there are dozens of these characters around appropriating bits and pieces of indigenous culture and spiritual practices to construct their own grifts. Some are actual criminals. Some claim Native ancestry they don't have. But they find people willing to platform them, and not just on late night talk radio. About 20 years ago, The Seattle Post Intelligencer did an expose on a guy who was making bank doing motivational speaking back when it was all the rage for corporations to have team-building retreats and that kind of thing. Sometimes they didn't vet the people very well. He was harmless, but his claims of being Indian were false and he knew it. It's similar to the stolen valor phenomenon, and I've noticed sometimes the same people are guilty of both.

Between this guy, Dr Oz and Dr Phil - Ophrah is responsible for promoting a lot of dodgy bullshit.

I can't believe Ray had such a short prison sentence. He was absolutely mad, a narcissist. The justice system is almost useless.

This isn't spirituality, it's sadistic torture. I've been on retreats run by genuine people and they're all about rest, meditation and nourishing food. You leave it feeling happier and healthier, not as though you've been tortured. Avoid anyone who says you have to put yourself through trauma like this. It's a huge red flag xx
