I'm a 9th grade teacher being forced to use IM for their integrated math series in high school. I went to school for 14 years for mathematics, have bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. I am 25 times more qualified to write math problems for my kids than the people writing this curriculum but have zero autonomy to do so. It is a constant source of frustration. The people who wrote this curriculum have not had enough math classes to even know what the word algebra means or even what it is the study of. All of the "math myths" you discuss are being shoved down my throat. I work at a school that is predominantly MLL and economic challenged kids and I am seeing all of the failures you guys were discussing. I have to say it does feel pretty hopeless. The admin and people in leadership positions are often not trained in math and also deal with their own anxiety around the subject. Talking to them about these issues seem to be completely pointless. They literally don't understand what we are trying to show them and would rather not have to think about it. When you are made to feel like your job is on the line it is very difficult to veer away from what we are told to do. It is a situation where compliance and negligence have become synonyms. I struggle with this every single day. The people in my own home often ask me to stop talking about it. This podcast feels like a lifeline. It is the only time I feel reminded that I am not alone in this. Thank you so so much for that.

Adding is just a fast way to count. Multiplying is a fast way to add. Subtraction and division are just the opposite, respectively. And fast is being fluent. So, get the basics committed to MEMORY! Yes, memory matters. Flunecy matters. Cognitive overload is real. I see it every day in my classroom. BIG roadblocks.

Notice the administrator doesn't want to get crap for not using the curriculum, but doesn't care that the majority of the children are NOT proficient!!! We have out priorities backwards!

San Francisco public schools uses Illustrative math for k to 5. The Board of Education just had a meeting on the dismal math progress and that they are off track. I sent them this fantastic podcast but I don't think they listen. There is a lot of grandstanding but unfortunately nobody wants to lead and change course. The students pay the price for this inaction

Many of the students who started elementary school using these teaching strategies are adult now. Are there any findings on their educational progress as young adults?

Who are these people making decisions for our kids education. As a parent without a teaching degree I know that the I Do, We Do, You Do order is very important and exact. Anybody unintelligent enough to get the order wrong or that believes you can do it however you please should not be in charge of making curriculum decisions for children. They should not be allowed to conduct professional development for teachers.
