Until Freddie Mercury Took the Stage Midge Ure wasn't watching Live Aid like everyone else. As one of the key figures behind Band Aid and Live Aid alongside Bob Geldof, Midge understood the enormous pressure hidden behind the world's biggest music event. The short performance slots. The technical risks. The global television audience. The possibility that one mistake could unfold in front of millions. He had even experienced that pressure himself with Ultravox. But then Queen took the stage. And Freddie Mercury did something that even one of the men who helped create Live Aid couldn't simply plan. Years later, Midge Ure recalled Freddie being completely in his element at Wembley and described Queen's relentless sequence of recognizable songs with one fascinating word: “Overkill.” But what did he really mean? And there was another strange detail. Midge later repeated a story he had heard about Freddie before Queen's legendary performance — that Freddie supposedly wasn't feeling his best before going onstage and that a few small whiskies may have helped perk him up. Midge never claimed he personally witnessed it. So was there any truth behind the story? Whatever happened backstage, the Freddie Mercury who emerged in front of more than 70,000 people showed little hesitation. From “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Radio Ga Ga” to the legendary call-and-response with Wembley, Queen transformed their brutally limited Live Aid slot into one of the most celebrated performances in rock history. But this wasn't simply luck. Queen had spent years performing for enormous crowds. Freddie had learned how to communicate across stadiums, turn spectators into participants, and make thousands of people respond to the smallest gesture. Live Aid gave Queen the stage. But it couldn't teach Freddie Mercury what to do with it. In this video, we uncover Midge Ure's fascinating perspective on Queen at Live Aid, the unusual Freddie Mercury story he heard, why he called Queen's performance “overkill,” and the hidden advantage Freddie carried into Wembley long before July 13, 1985. Midge Ure helped create one of the biggest stages in music history. But when Freddie Mercury stepped onto it... even one of Live Aid's creators discovered something he couldn't have planned. 📌 Subscribe: Click on the link below ➡ @freddiemercurysecretstories #FreddieMercury #Queen #LiveAid #MidgeUre #QueenLiveAid #FreddieMercuryLiveAid #LiveAid1985 #Ultravox #Wembley #WembleyStadium #BohemianRhapsody #RadioGaGa #WeAreTheChampions #BrianMay #BobGeldof #BandAid #ClassicRock #RockHistory #MusicHistory ⚠ DISCLAIMER: This is a fan-made channel and its content has no connection whatsoever with Queen, Freddie Mercury, or their companies.
