DnD’s current market strategy is like a paint company deciding to sell paintings, rather than trying to sell more paint, more brushes, and more canvas.

I love that it was like three questions and then an hour long answer.

I really appreciate how the interviewer lets the interviewee speak. So many channels the host wants FaceTime or whatever and constantly tries to add in (often irrelevant) commentary.

"What percentage of people heard about the OGL? Well, what percentage of highly engaged DM's heard about the OGL. BC they're the people that matter." Exactly, couldn't have said it better. Dnd's real audience for their 95% products are the invested minority that actually run the game. Aka, the people who Do pay a lot of attention to what they're doing. It's like claiming a classroom full of people wouldn't notice if you make buying textbooks harder. You're not selling the books to the whole classroom, you're selling it to the TEACHER, and the Teacher cares.

I was expecting an interview. I got a uni prof holding a 101 lesson in history, business, game dev simultaneously

That was an interesting point about the modules selling 100,000 copies in the early 80s. I've always felt part of the issue with WOTC D&D was it was too focused on making books for players. You need player interest. But most of the burden of planning, organizing and sustaining a group falls on the GM. So if the company in charge of D&D isn't putting out lots of modules and supplements to help continue a GMs enthusiasm, give them a leg up when they don't have enough material that week, etc, it misses the opportunity to help grow the number of functional game groups (which are what you need if you want people to keep buying D&D books)

22:00 This decision is even more baffling when you remember that they largely marketed this new edition to the theatre and roleplay community, the least likely to enjoy this facet of gameplay.

If only they could've given "I wanna be a cool archer" to the Ranger.

The single most important thing that Mike says in this video, that is true for any business, is that the further the people making the decisions get from the product, the worse decisions they make. Know your product and then you'll know your audience.

The amount of truth in this video is staggering. This is the mentality of "understanding you customer" Vs. the corporate mentality of "customers exist".
