This is beautiful. I run ultras. Not ever to these guys standards. But it helps me realise and understand that I can overcome my demons and be the best daddy to my boys. My son ran the last mile with me on my 35 miler last week and it made me feel human. And he’ll remember that forever. Thanks guys for your podcasts and your brain food! It helps a lot of people trust me! Love to everyone who reads this stay hard!!!

At 52 I recently got into running again. We have 13 acres of land. Instead of being lazy and buying a tractor,I bought a DR walk behind brush mower. Walking while cutting builds my ligaments and tendons. Thanks for the encouragement.

I think each person comes into adulthood, or even life, with a baseline state. Which is like a relaxed rubberband. If you want that rubberband to take a certain shape that is different from its natural shape, you have to exert force on it, and maintain it. It's the same for us, and it varies greatly between people. My natural state is to find the easy way in everything. But it gets me nowhere, and i have to exert force in particular ways, constantly, to maintain myself in the desired state. Maybe for you it's just one thing that doesn't require too much force, but for another their natural makeup may be so far from a desired state that it takes tremendous effort to maintain a well functioning self and way of life. And if they let up, their state will quickly snap back into its natural state, like the rubberband.

I’ve listened to this episode 3 times now. So many good points, it has really helped me at this stage of my journey, I tore my shoulder labrum while I was still in a boot 6 months post op ankle surgery from torn ligaments and constant ankle swelling. I was a Marine Drill Instructor and after ankle surgery they ended my SDA tour, I felt so defeated. I was also 33 years old and was still trying to out do guys at 25. Didn’t even seem like a challenge but my body just didn’t recover like theirs, or whatever justification my mind created but after a torn labrum and rehabbing my ankle I went into a dark place. Chris was right. What do guys do when your only outlet is not longer available? What does one do when your stress relief will cause more problems than it will solve? How do you keep doing bands and yoga to get yourself back to performing? It doesn’t create that inner peace that comes from slaying demons in your mind. Then all that’s left is the demons and the couch. The phone. The wondering if this is it? How can people live like this? I went to that dark place to discover my identity was tied up in something that may have been built by hard work but was still only temporary. When I began to accept my circumstances and be grateful for the health I had left that’s when I began to heal. Like a hero’s journey, in order to be deserving of strength I had to know what life was like without it, so that I would never take it for granted .

I really wish Cam would talk more about being a husband and a father. Have a very similar background to him and now as a father of 4 this is the very struggle I have. I want my kids to feel confident to take on anything as young adults, but I don't want them to hate me because I was so hard on them when they were growing up. Such a tough balance and the world is a pretty tough place.. especially for young men.

I’m a huge fan of Chris and the pod. But it’s crazy to hear him lecture guests about parenting and marriage lol

1:09:54 Man I run into this everyday. In the military, as an officer all people seem to care about are the things they can measure. No one is measuring the things that they care about and it develops this weird task based success metric. Preaching this is difficult but I think the best leaders need to understand this in order to get the buy in from their (in my case) subordinates to drive unit success. I really appreciate you guys talking about this!
