If you want to be able to see the ants without disturbing them, try wrapping their test tubes in a transparent red film, because the ants can't see red light. That way, you can monitor them without ever stressing them out.

Don’t give up! I’ve known ants for a very long time but recently, I’ve finally gotten the courage to start my own colonies. I have a carpenter ant (we call them sugar ants here in Australia) queen and a rainbow ant queen. This series has made me realise the trials and challenges that ant keeping presents, but it has also given me hope.

I was so sad and took a break but a year ago i started and i can say i have 5 amazing beginner ant colonies. And i had succes because of those deaths i learned that you dont put them in a big nest to soon so its normal everyone has death with ants

GOODLUCK and keep up the good work!!!!!!

One thing I would recommend because of some of the test tubes looked dirty is every time there is dirty water or mold is to move them to a different test tube also if they are dying and they have mites or something AntsCanada has some videos of how to help the get rid of diseases

😔 rip ant bonnie
And btw dont feel bad, in the wild the chances of founding are much lower than in captivity, as well as the fact that is was just a mistake, after all you weren't killing them on purpose

Quick tip. Some colonies should have about a year to grow before hibernation. I would recommend a heating cable for your colonies to stop this. Most ants need heat to survive and it might not be time for hibernation. All though some ants do hibernate no matter what but I’m not sure what species does and doesn’t. If you do decide to put them in hibernation make sure to add a heating cable when they wake up. I’m glad you looked for advice and either way will be fine in the end hibernation or not. I hope your colonies succeed in this and continue to grow.
