It goes down eventually, in its own time, while you stand there in it. The kitchen sink takes half a minute to empty. And there is a smell coming out of that drain that no amount of scrubbing the basin ever touches. So you poured something down it, and it helped for a week or two, and then it was back. There is very likely nothing wrong with your plumbing. There is a coat of grease inside that pipe, and everything you have been pouring down there has been the wrong thing for it. I am Elias Yoder. I farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The method takes five drops of one thing you already have, a kettle, and a night of doing nothing at all. Five drops and not a cupful, because the soap is not what shifts the trouble. It only lets the water carry it, and the water does the carrying. I was a boy and it was my job to wash the cream separator, and one evening I was in a hurry and the water was cold. My grandfather picked a cone off the top of the stack, ran his thumb across it and held it to the lamp, and there was a dull waxy film right where I had just scrubbed. He did not say much about my scrubbing. He put a kettle on, handed me one cone and told me to dip it, and the film came off and floated away and I never touched it. You cannot wash fat with cold water. Heat carries fat. Cold sets it. That is what has happened in your pipe. Grease goes down warm and the pipe underground is cold, so it sets on the wall, a little each time, for years. Hair catches on it. Food catches on it. The pipe narrows from the inside. And that warm wet coating in the dark is where your smell is coming from. So you do not have a plug. You have a lining. And the two want opposite treatment, which is why a drain that got snaked last year is slow again this year. Never use this or anything else after a commercial drain cleaner, because that caustic sits in the trap and can splash back at your face. Never mix cleaners, and never put bleach in with vinegar or anything acid, because that makes a harmful gas and your face is right above the sink. And go easy with boiling water on plastic pipes, since very hot tap water does nearly the same job without softening the joints. There is no scheme in why nobody tells you this. A bottle you buy every time a drain slows is a business. Five drops of soap, a kettle, and a habit twice a month is not. Tonight, put five drops of soap in your worst drain and pour a kettle of hot water down it slowly. In the morning fill that sink to the top and pull the plug. Just once, and see what it does.
