A little detail, Coraline's mom is wearing a neck brace, signifying a rather recent accident. OH and Mr.Bobinsk is wearing a Chernobyl Liquidator Medal given to those who helped clean up the 1986 nuclear disaster. So that's why his skin is blue.

Eyes are the windows to the soul. That goes back to ancient mesopotamia. So when finding eyes she's really finding souls. That's why you only need one each.

I'm an animator and did stop motion in college. I can confirm it takes forever. Our assignments were 5 seconds long each week.

28:19 "she said that she loved us, but she locked us here, and ate up our lives" that line always chills me.

There is a movie director named Don Bluth. He has done things like Land Before Time, Secret of NIMH (AMAZING movie), and Anastasia. One of my favourate things he has said is "You can show kids almost anything as long as there is a happy ending". I LOVE the creepy and strange, did all the way back when I was a kid so long ago. A lot of what adults think kids can't handle... kids just see as a fun adventure.

I think the 3 old taffy bowls that the elders downstairs offered to coraline had dates which was the years each of the 3 ghost children went missing

For your question at the end, the entire film was stop-motion besides scenes like the fog which was added after. but anything that was possible to make by hand was created. It took years to finish this movie

My kids are 5 & 6 and they've been watching Coraline, Nightmare Before Christmas, & Corpse Bride for the last couple years. They loooove the spooky animated movies! These kids are built different 😅

From what I recall, they used dozens of soundstages with massively detailed sets during filming. They also used an earlier form of 3D printing for the many facial expressions among other things. It is one of the greatest examples of exceptional stop motion animation.

Kubo and the two strings is another underrated stop motion masterpiece, highly recommend it.

Although her parents seem a bit mean, they've just moved, the mom has a neck brace, so she's injured, and it's very much implied that they're low on money at the moment. Hence the lack of groceries and Coraline's mom saying 'well, she can buy all your clothes' about the gloves (that were $24 btw!) Although yes, they could've been nicer, they're clearly stressed, and once they're work is done and they have money they lighten up a lot and get her the gloves to apologize.

Paranorman is also unsettlingly fun and so highly recommended. From the same studio, Laika
