Hi Stacey, The lead singer is David Byrne. How did they do this? Well since you asked...... This is from the 'Stop Making Sense' concert movie - directed by Jonathan Demme (who later did The Silence of the Lambs). It was filmed at The Pantages Theater in Los Angeles and shot over four nights in December of 1983. One concept of the show was to begin small, very small...then slowly build the presentation with each new song.

The bass player, Tina Weymouth & the drummer Chris Frantz are married. Only four of them are Talking Heads members but for this tour they had added a percussionist (Steve Scales), guitarist (Brothers Johnson's Alex Weir), keyboardist (Bernie Worrell from Parliament-Funkadelic) and backup singers (Ednah Holt and former Bride of Funkenstein Lynn Mabry). They had beefed up their quartet in prior tours, such as adding Adrian Belew on lead guitar a few years prior to this. Lead singer David Byrne walks on to a bare stage with a portable cassette tape player and an acoustic guitar. He introduces "Psycho Killer" by saying he wants to play a tape, but in reality a Roland TR-808 drum machine starts playing from the mixing board. With each successive song, Byrne is joined by more members of the band: first by Tina Weymouth for "Heaven" (with Lynn Mabry providing harmony vocals from backstage), second by Chris Frantz for "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel", and third by Jerry Harrison for "Found a Job".

Performance equipment is wheeled out and added to the set to accommodate the additional musicians: back-up singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt, keyboardist Bernie Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales, and guitarist Alex Weir. The first song to feature the entire lineup is "Burning Down the House".

Cheers,
Nick Rivers from your Twitch Channel.

This concert is one of the greatest ever recorded. It needs to be watched from beginning to end. They start with a bare stage and construct an entire show in real time. If you were going to watch only one thing from Talking Heads, this should be it.

PS - They didn't live through wartime, but they did live through art school!

As a war kid who escaped, the lyrics always make me cry while I danced with friends in my new home, New York City. The song shows how people with trauma are so good at putting on a happy face and dancing to throw everyone off what we're really feeling. From Derry, Belfast to Sarajevo, to Mosul, from Soweto to Gaza and East Timor and Medellin , and so manh more places...

If you haven’t already, do yourself the extreme favor of watching this entire concert film. Quite possibly the best concert film of all time. Definitely in top five that I can think of. And keep listening to more Talking Heads because they really were a phenomenal band.

Becoming a teenager in January 1980 was such a gift. The music and social vibe of the early to late 80s was a hell of a decade to be 13 to 23.

STOP MAKING SENSE was filmed as a concert movie, and is considered as one of the best concert movies ever produced. This track was only the 7th song to be performed in the concert, there’s 8 more songs. One of the original New Wave bands and the first to perform at CBGBs in New York, where so many bands got their breaks in the 80s.
