I remember seeing this telecast live. Never seen Connors passed so many times.

In this match Connors is shown as a great champion in defeat, with humor, naturally. Very far from the bad boy that the press told us at that time

A beautiful win by a graceful player.

With the racquet and string technology of that era, play was much slower than it is now... but not as slow as in this match. Orantes wove a web of light, low balls against Connors, and the American had to bring all his power to get to the net and finish the rally. He ended up desperate, with a lot of long approaches and several missed volleys, in addition to the points won by the Spaniard with good lobs and passing shots.
A few years later, in 1982, Wilander used a similar tactic against Vilas to win his first Roland Garros.

I have seen this match in 1975 at the end of the summer in Lugo Spain. The Spanish Tennis Federation had a copy in black and white movie... Previously they announced the display in the local newspaper "El Progreso"... so I was very happy to see my hero Orantes to become a champion! What a player was Orantes! In those times we only could see Orantes in TV in Barcelona -Conde de Godó tournement... matches against Nastase were the best ones!

I am amazed at the quality of his passing-shots (both forehand and backhand, both crosscourt and down the line) and his lobs (both crosscourt and down the line, with top spin and also back-spin).

He seemed to move magically, was always close to the ball, deceptively fast.

Very good drop shots as well. Good first serves too.

Everything (but power) in his game seemed to be just phenomenal.

Possibly one of the best "touch" players I've ever seen.

His absolute control of the ball in almost every shot was mesmerising...

I dont understand Connors game plan. Orantes played a tough semi and was tired. Connors should lengthen the rallies and not hit so close to the lines. He did what orantes wanted and made too errors.

This should have been the year that Jimmy padded his Grand Slam win totals. Mac and Borg weren't there yet. But Ashe punctured Jimmy's aura of invincibility at Wimbledon. I think if Jimmy plays Orantes 10 times, he wins 8.

Wow ! I don't remember this match and Manuel was incredible. Thank you for this great post. It is so nice to be able to actually see the ball and I guess that goes to ESPN Classic Canada giving us a higher definition , yes ? It's almost impossible to find watchable old tennis film.
