Judy Buenoano: How She Got Away With Murder for Years

For more than a decade, Judy Buenoano appeared to be a devoted mother, nurse, and grieving widow. But behind that carefully constructed image was a disturbing pattern of mysterious deaths, life insurance policies, poisoning, and eventually a failed attempt to kill her fiancé. How did Judy Buenoano get away with murder for so many years? The story begins with the mysterious 1971 death of her husband, James Goodyear. Years later came Bobby Joe Morris, followed by the poisoning and eventual drowning of her disabled son Michael Buenoano. Each death appeared to have an explanation—until one victim survived. In 1983, John Gentry survived a devastating car bombing. Investigators then discovered something far more disturbing: the vitamins he had been taking contained arsenic and paraformaldehyde. That discovery opened the door to a much larger investigation into Judy's past. What followed was an investigation involving insurance records, exhumations, toxicology evidence, and testimony from people who had been closest to Judy. Investigators eventually connected evidence from James Goodyear, Bobby Joe Morris, and Michael Buenoano to the broader pattern surrounding her. This documentary examines the life and crimes of Judy Buenoano, the people who trusted her, the insurance money surrounding the deaths, the investigation that finally exposed her, and the courtroom proceedings that brought her long-running deception to an end.
