  Leif Erikson did not actually grow up in Europe; he spent most of his childhood and grew to adulthood in Greenland at his father’s estate, Brattahlíð. However, he was born and spent his earliest years in the west of Iceland (around the Breiðafjörður region), which places his early Icelandic roots firmly on the North American Plate. The first known european to set foot on american soil was his foster-father Tyrker, a german.

  Hello from Newfoundland. &nbsp;I&apos;m currently about 3 hours drive south of Lance Aux Meadows, where the Vikings landed. &nbsp;Plan on visiting this summer again.<br><br>Edit: &nbsp;I&apos;d like to also mention I&apos;ve swam in Black Duck Brook. &nbsp; There&apos;s a nice spot there called triple falls and it&apos;s a nice spot for jumping off cliffs into the waterfall&apos;s pool.

  Most of this seems fairly tale to me. Some people in the 1700s had little to no records , much less this far ago.

  Greenlandish Vikings did have sundail-compasses. Granted, it&apos;d have to be daylight to work correctly.

  It was just the lack of colonist numbers that the Vikings failed to conquer North America. <br><br>The only thing that saved the &quot;indigenous&quot; people was their more numerous population.

  I find it interesting that when Freydis Eiriksdottir&apos;s visited the Vatican that the she didn’t mention her adventures in the unknown New World/Vinland? Freydis probably did but the Vatican ignored it or buried it?
