  This is a direct-to-disc process from the early 1940's. Vinyl was mastered from magnetic tape recordings by the 50's and 60's.

  When I recorded my first solo album. I used that old process. I did all the process all alone from recording all the instruments up to the pressing.

  Wow.  I never realized there were so many steps involved.  My father had a decent collection of red acetate records when I was a kid.  My mom threw them out when they divorced.  It would be interesting to see how CD's are made today.

  The record industry started recording on audio tape in 1947 and direct-to-disk recording was phased out pretty quickly after that. Also shellac was only used on 78s, so the first 17 minutes of the film definitely dates to the mid-1940s. At around the 17-minute mark, a film from the 1950s shows how LPs and 45s are created from tape. RCA had also switched from wax masters to lacquer masters, which are still used today. They also got rid of the gold plating and the process has been simplified from the 78s manufacturing, using vinyl. The second film showed an Elvis Presley cover, so it dates to about 1956.

  Could that be Charles O’Connell conducting the Blue Danube at 1’37? He was Victor’s A&R director until he left for Columbia in 1944. And is that Richard Mohr producing the Charles Munch session in Boston? This is a priceless film.

  Lots of people and new artists just want physical creations again hence vinyl is the biggest selling physical format in the last few years. I’ve been recording professionally for 30 years as a player and engineer and now I mostly get asked for tape and records again. No one asks for or wants CD. Even though I can provide 358khz 32bit or even hi-res multichannel audio…oh well, whatever turns them on. I’ve built a vinyl record cutter to make short runs. It’s all enjoyment of music in the end. Life is short.

  This was a much harder process.  If someone made a mistake you had to start from scratch.
