An axolotl regrows a lost leg because it heals better than you do. It doesn't. You run the same regeneration program it does, and your fingertip proves it. What stops you is your own wound response.
So we installed that ability in a human arm and worked out what breaks.
In nineteen seventy-four, Cynthia Illingworth stopped operating on children's crushed fingertips in Sheffield and simply dressed them instead. About three hundred of them grew back: skin, pulp, bone, nail, fingerprint. Nearly forty years later Mayumi Ito's group in New York found the mechanism. Stem cells behind the nail bed fire a signal that rebuilds the nail and pulls nerves into the wound, and a blastema forms at the tip. The same structure a salamander builds. Cut below the base of the nail and none of it happens. The switch is about a centimeter long.
Then the experiment that reverses the whole question. In two thousand thirteen, James Godwin's team stripped macrophages out of axolotls and amputated a limb. The wound closed. The limb never came back. The stump filled with fibrous tissue instead. A scar, in an axolotl. They waited for the macrophages to return, cut the same failed stump again, and it regenerated perfectly. The difference between regrowing a leg and scarring was not the genes. It was which immune cells arrived first.
And the number that ends it. Human nerves regenerate at about one millimeter a day, measured since the nineteen forties. Shoulder to fingertip is roughly seventy centimeters. Seven hundred days. Meanwhile the attempt is already running in every amputee: severed nerves grow, find nothing, and coil into a neuroma. The literature calls that the expected outcome, not a complication.
Four things this video corrects. Forty days buys a young axolotl a working leg, not a finished one. Your liver restores mass, not shape. Body size does not slow regeneration, but metamorphosis halves it. And the claim that axolotls do not get cancer, circulating since nineteen seventy-one, is supported by evidence that a review this year found thin and almost entirely indirect.
