John Latrobe was an early attorney for the B&O Railroad and the inventor of a popular cast iron stove. His brother, BH Latrobe II, was chief engineer for the B&O and designed the massive Thomas Viaduct, still in use today. Their father, BH Latrobe, designed the US Capitol.

One interesting fact about General John Gibbon is that, even though he was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg and evacuated to the rear, during his subsequent convalescence, Gibbon came back to Gettysburg. On November 19, 1863 he was back and attended the dedication of the new national cemetery. He actually heard President Abraham Lincoln deliver the Gettysburg Address.
Source: Personal Recollections of the Civil War, Gibbon p 184
Gibbon was entitled to be buried at the Gettysburg National because he was an actual combatant at the battle. He is, however, buried in Arlington; “Lee’s front yard”.

A sobering first person accounting of a part of one battle of a great war that literally shaped this nation, like a small cut of a sculptor's chisel. The wretched inhuman brutality sewn on man and beast alike. The lifelong scars, physical and especially mental. A truly heavy price for freedom.

According to "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War", Gibbons division official losses at the battle of Gettysburg total were 1631, which was for all 3 days. Harrow's brigade took nearly half of those.

Fascinating letter. It does sound like a letter from out of one of the regimental histories, the experience is very well described. Knowing it comes from the observations of Gibbon gives it immense weight.
