  I would argue that the single largest financial decision that <i>most</i> people will ever make is not buying a home, it&apos;s choosing a spouse.<br><br>[Edit] I got a lot of notifications about this comment and I read the responses and thought it deserved some explanation. &nbsp;This Money Guy show is targeted at Americans, and I am American. &nbsp;Roughly two-thirds of American adults get married in their lifetime. &nbsp;Coincidentally, roughly two-thirds of Americans adults purchase a home in their lifetime. &nbsp; <br> <br>For the most part, real estate has inherent value and that value is predictable based on market conditions. &nbsp;The financial impact of buying a house has a lot to do with your debt/income ratio, your income stability, and the real estate market. <br> <br>The financial impact of choosing a spouse is not the same. &nbsp;Having a spouse that&apos;s not aligned with your financial goals certainly can destroy your financial future. &nbsp;However, even if you have a spouse that is aligned with your financial goals, you aren&apos;t financially secure. &nbsp;If you end up divorcing your spouse, for any reason whatsoever, the impact on your financial future may be catastrophic. <br> <br>The &quot;one house, one spouse&quot; rule isn&apos;t just a saying, and houses are much more predictable than spouses. &nbsp;Choose wisely.

  It all comes down to extreme discipline and delayed gratification (early on)...Mid-30s, two kids, zero debt (including a paid for home) and net worth of $1.7m all &apos;self-made&apos;..

  At 39 in 2024 my wife and I only had 120k combined in our retirement plans. We got out of debt and as of last year we’re saving 25%. We already have about 240k combined. Her work started matching 10% last yr. Our goal this yr is 30%. Hopefully we can keep that up. I think we will be fine even though we don’t really do much until almost 40.

  I rode a bicycle to work for nearly a year after graduating college until I could afford to pay cash for a late model used car. &nbsp;Paid cash for every car since. &nbsp;I&apos;m a multimillionaire mutant.

  Wealth, just like debt, creeps up on you. You didn’t end up in debt overnight and the same is true for wealth. It’s the small consistent actions that pull you up, put you down, or keep you even. Please start early, quit the $8 coffee, new car every couple of years and newest phone.
