  The word غيرة doesn’t translate to jealousy, the word غيرة is a character of honor for the man where he feels very protective and concerned about his womenfolk, “Jealousy” doesn’t give the word it’s justice. Jealous is a negative word, غيرة is one of the most honorable traits of a man and without it he is an no man.

  It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah that she said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “O ummah of Muhammad, there is no one who has greater protective jealousy than Allah if His male or female slave commits zina. O ummah of Muhammad, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.”<br><br>Narrated by al-Bukhaari (1044) and Muslim (901).

  Alhamdulillah<br>this ruling feels like a mercy:<br><br>1. It is a mercy upon the one who commits the Zina - otherwise they would have been killed in the house <br>2. It is a mercy upon the one who is jealous, his jealousy may have caused him to commit murder but the requirement for witnesses prevents him from doing so<br>3. It is a mercy upon the couple, the mutual cursing allows a mechanism by which both can be separated rather than live a life of suspicion <br>4. It is a mercy upon society - Allah has removed an excuse by which mankind could commit bloodshed

  Hence, so-called &apos;honour killings&apos; are totally haram. Some people in some countries try to justify it even though they do not come with witnesses or Shari&apos; evidence.

  This is an excellent reminder to myself and the rest of creation to lower our gazes and keep far from the forbidden desires and actions that Allah has prohibited us from. He has Protective Jealousy in a manner befitting His Majesty, and He is Severe in Punishment. May Allah forgive us for our constant shortcomings and aid us upon His Obedience aameen.
