  Truly nothing could‘ve prepared me for my rats having mites AND internal parasites when I adopted them. It‘s been a rough journey but I‘m slowly starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel 😮‍💨

  Great video, thanks! I have two young girls and already contemplating what to do when one of them passes away. Getting a new rat is of course an option but what if we decide to leave it at that? Who is willing to rescue a (probably) near of life end rat and is the change of home more stressful than losing her sister and being alone? There are not many videos discussing this unpleasant side of keeping rats. Other than that I agree with all that they are wonderful pets.

  I use 'millie mats' dog pee mats from Amazon & I can honestly say these work wonders. I cut them to size & they absorb the pee & I have hardly any smell from my girls at all. My boys smell much worse & it is not the mats that smell but their litter boxes, if I clean the litter box regularly the smell is nothing bad. I clean out the cages once a week & the mats wash great & they don't even chew them.

  On the cage door to make a bridge for your rats I put chaines with couple of clips on each ends make sure the chains are the same length so when you open the door of the cage it's level so it's a little bridge they can stand on to come to say hi

  Im curious how do you clean the wooden structures,  or any ropes. With fleece material I know you can just put it in the washing machine, but what about the other stuff.

  What do you do if they run on thr sofa or the floor or the matt and pee on it??

  question, u say they pee everywhere. of course no one likes that. but could you train them not to by putting them in a small temporary cage for a few minutes when they do?

  Great video, thank you! Sorry to hear about the allergy, that sucks - I once developed what my GP called a “spontaneous avocado allergy” which was tragic in so many ways haha - but it did go away after about three years! I know that’s not much consolation. 🫂<br>Back to the topic of rat habitats and enrichment - you nailed so many crucial points and this video should be compulsory viewing for anyone buying a rat. I have two girls, “Brave” the wild-born Norway rat I hand-raised from a velvet (found her cold and non-responsive on a railway platform) and her Dalmatian roommate “Pony”. They are so clever. Brave knows some tricks and is incredibly affectionate. They have a double Critter Nation habitat and I cycle out their enrichment toys and habitat items like climbing frames and digging basins every two weeks. They get 1hr minimum free roam every day. I put down Timothy hay and herbal hay like chamomile with some hides and throw forage treats throughout. They absolutely love to explore. I think about it like taking your dog for a walk - it’s a must!! Thanks for drawing attention to the sophistication of this amazing species.
