Did Tolkien Rush Eowyn And Faramir?

I feel like this relationship improves the more often you read it and the age you read it at. I first read it as a tween and I thought it was rushed and unrealistic and she settled. Now, looking back on it and having reread it multiple times as an almost 40 year old, I see that Faramir was the best choice for her. She desperately needed that calm and respect in her life. He might be the only character other than Merry who actually talked TO her instead of about her, around her, and for her 😢
Did it move a little fast? Maybe by modern standards, but keep in mind that it does take place in a time of war and both have been through a lot. I don’t begrudge them the happiness they found.

What? No - Peter Jackson rushed it. Their relationship in the book is one of the most beautiful slow-burn romances in English literature.

Think this is not accurately describing what is actually written in LOTR by Tolkien. He pretty clearly explains how and why they fell in love with each other. This is clearest for Faramir. Eowyn's sorrow, and the pity he felt for her, deeply moved him. That and her beauty made him fall in love at once. Eowyn needed more time and courtship by Faramir to shift her desire from Aragon to fall in love with Faramir. It was Faramir's love and her respect for him as a gentle warrior and lord of men that made her finally love him. She wanted to die in battle, but through Faramir and his love she changes and becomes healed. Their love story is one of my absolute favorite parts of the three books.

Elwë and Melian, Beren and Luthien, Aragorn and Arwen, I've seen other relationships get super serious super fast. Given that nobody had to commit to eternity or forego immortality for it this is one of the more reasonable courtships in the Legendarium 😅

I do also think it is not a rushed relationship, because the two are both introvert characters and they will not make fast decisions.
I rather think they thought about it long before, how a good partner should be. And through the suffering and finding healing, they could understand eachother, and this feeling gets them closer and more intimate in love.

I don't think that it was rushed, as you said much happens in the Houses of Healing between the lines that Tolkien wrote. I think that's why writers often pick this scene to expand in fanfiction; I have done so myself. They are a couple of characters that are complex and nuanced, especially Éowyn.

I think that what bothers me is how abruptly her mood changed at the end. If it were possible, I would have suggested to Tolkien that he wright about how, after the fall of Sauron, the Healers discharged Faramir and Eowyn, he started taking up his responsibilities, but they had meals together, talked when he had time, when he didn't she was at the House of Healing learning from them. When Aragorn's party reached the city, she felt lost and that was when Faramir told her some of what she needed to hear, and she replied that she needed to hear those things.

They both fought in battles to save Gondor.
They both came close to death before being healed by the same hand.
It makes good sense that these two should fall in love.

Although it look like a rush from our modern culture’s perspective, I don’t think it looks unusual when seeing it from Tolkien’s, his time period’s, or his story’s perspectives. The way that Eowyn and Faramir’s pasts set up a perfect chemistry before they even met, much like Tolkien and his wife’s.

The blood of Westernesse ran nearly true in Faramir, per Gandalf, and he read the hearts of others as shrewdly as his father did. He told Eowyn that she admired Aragorn as a young soldier would admire a great captain, and rightly so. Aragorn also knew that she did not know him well enough to truly love him, but loved the "hope and glory of great deeds", although he valued and respected her feelings. Eowyn had the time to get to know Faramir, who was a great warrior, a gentle man and one of the few with the self control to not desire the Ring. Being now healed in heart and spirit, she knew that Faramir was the man for her. Faramir could have chosen any young woman in Gondor, but hadn't. His gift of reading hearts helped him to know that Eowyn was the woman he'd been waiting for. It's unfortunate that the movie gave such short shrift to their story.
