Can a 240 Sq Ft Unfinished Cabin Be Livable?

Two days before Becca comes back to the cabin, Dad and I are still trying to make the place look slightly less like a construction site and slightly more like somewhere a civilized person might willingly spend the night. There’s no road to this property. In summer, the driveway consists of an Argo ride through the bush, a boat trip downriver, and a fair amount of lifting the same piece of lumber more times than a man cares to remember. Every window, sheet of metal, tool, and board has earned its way in. Dad is nearly 81 and still game for coming this far into the bush to lend a hand. There’s something special about working alongside your old man — especially when neither of you has to say much. One man picks up one end of the window, the other grabs the far side. A crooked board gets steadied. A flashlight appears before you ask. Nobody calls the tune; somehow you both know your part. This week we brighten up the cabin with more windows, finish a few jobs before Becca arrives, run the Argo and river route, and continue our ongoing effort to turn a remote shack with a good wood stove into something approaching respectable accommodations. Becca has survived this place before. Last winter she came in by snow machine through blowing snow, when the roof was mostly a tarp and the wood stove was doing a heroic amount of work in our argument that this was technically a cabin. This time, however, I may have promised something closer to an off-grid Airbnb. A man ought to be careful what he says in town. And then there’s Oscar, the juvenile red-tailed hawk who has apparently decided our worksite suits him just fine. He disappears, Dad mourns his departure, and then Oscar comes back and sits on the Argo like he owns the property. There is beauty in just about everything out here — even the miserable weather. Life this far from civilization is roughly 98% natural beauty and 2% sudden, crippling fear. It’s that 2% that keeps a man humble. So with Becca on the way, Dad still helping, Oscar supervising, and the cabin very much not ready, we’ve got two days to make some progress.
