The Three-Inch Shift That Stopped Coolant | The Plate That Starved Fermi 1

On 5 October 1966 abnormal instrument readings at the experimental Fermi 1 reactor prompted a cautious manual scram. Operators could measure temperatures and reactivity yet still could not see what had obstructed the liquid-sodium flow beneath the core. "The Loose Zirconium Plate That Blocked a Nuclear Reactor’s Coolant" - the 60th-anniversary account of how six thin safeguard sheets migrated, starved four fuel subassemblies, and produced a bounded partial melt inside an opaque sodium system. Did the plant’s instruments give operators enough information to act earlier, or did the very design of the monitoring system guarantee that the obstruction would remain invisible until the core was dismantled?
