A truly fascinating and terrifying interview. The ratio between wages and renting / buying a property - is permanently broken. Only radical policy can address this mess.

The developers buy and don’t build. Let’s create a policy that punishes hoarding land without purpose

"right to buy" should have had strings attached that they must always be a primary residence and can never be rented out.

This is by far one of the best and most comprehensive discussions of housing on the Internet. There are a lot of podcasts about housing and they are almost all just repeating the usual talking points from the real estate industry.

Legit one of the best discussions of the UK housing market.

Works as intended. Assets going up in price benfits asset holders and scarsity does not keep rent down either

One of the reasons property is so expensive is because of the land banking by the big 5 developers of the UK. It's more profitable to build fewer   houses.

There is no incentive to exceed or even meet demand when relying on the private market to build houses. Because by not producing enough, you're rewarded by the price of your asset going up.

It's not just London that's socially atomised, everywhere in the UK is.

I was in London in 86 and had to move back up north because I couldn't even afford to buy a one bed flat off the tube line. You needed two decent wages, both ft permanent posts. My job was reasonably well paid but temporary contract

The country should view high housing costs the same way we view high taxes. High housing costs mean less disposable income and less money spent in the local economy. High housing costs mean businesses need to pay wages so that people can afford housing, but then this makes the businesses uncompetative. Businesses are effecting paying wages to your landlord and your bank.
