The Film That Burns Underwater — The History of Nitrocellulose

🔥 In 1846, a chemistry professor in Basel spilled a flask of nitric and sulfuric acid across his kitchen floor. He grabbed the nearest thing at hand — his wife's cotton apron — wiped up the mess, rinsed it out, and hung it over the stove to dry. It flared up and was gone. No smoke. No ash. Almost nothing left behind at all. What he had made in ninety seconds of panic would go on to fire the rifles of both world wars, become the first commercial plastic anyone could buy, and carry the entire first half of motion picture history on a strip of clear film. Its name is nitrocellulose. And the reason it could do all three of those things is the same reason it killed one hundred and twenty-three people in a hospital basement in Cleveland eighty-three years later: it does not need air to burn. Schönbein was not the first to nitrate cotton — a French chemist named Théophile Pelouze had done it eight years earlier and moved on — but he understood what he was holding, and he called it gun cotton. The first factory to make it, at Faversham in England, blew up within a year and killed at least eighteen workers; Austria's own state gun cotton institute saw its magazines catch fire in storage with nobody lighting anything, and banned the material outright. In 1865 a British chemist named Frederick Abel fixed the instability by pulping the fibers instead of trying to wash them clean, and in the 1880s a French engineer named Paul Vieille turned the stabilized material into Poudre B, the propellant that made the French army's Lebel rifle the first smokeless military rifle on Earth in 1886 and sent every other army scrambling to catch up — including Alfred Nobel, who lost a patent lawsuit over the British answer, cordite. The same chemistry, run a different way, became Celluloid, built in the 1860s to win a cash prize for a billiard ball that did not require killing an elephant, and it became the first plastic anyone could actually buy. Then George Eastman used it to make the first transparent, flexible film base in 1889, and the first fifty years of cinema were recorded on a material that was, chemically, a slow-burning propellant with pictures on it — which is why a projection booth fire in Paris killed one hundred and twenty-six people in 1897, and why fireproof projection booths eventually became mandatory by law. It powered the artillery of the First World War, manufactured by thirty thousand workers, most of them women, at a Scottish factory Arthur Conan Doyle nicknamed the devil's porridge. And on a Wednesday morning in 1929, a room full of decomposing X-ray film in a Cleveland hospital basement ignited without a spark and filled the building with gas, killing one hundred and twenty-three people in what remains the deadliest hospital disaster in American history.
