COMMENT: For nine years, Missy LeHand lived three floors above the Oval Office, signed FDR's personal checks, and decided whether to wake him when Hitler invaded Poland. Then a stroke at 44 ended her usefulness, and the White House quietly removed her from history. Does loyalty without an official title ever survive the person it was given to?

Gain FREE access to secret full-length documentaries on wealthy families "too scandalous for YouTube" by joining our newsletter: https://www.substack.com/@oldmoneyluxury

Everything stated here with regards to Rheumatic fever and associated A-fib, heart valve disorders, and renal failure is completely correct and still occurs today. I cannot explain how much these patients suffer even with today's treatments such as cardiac oblation, heart surgeries, medications, and, in the worse cases, hemodialysis. Often times their lives must center on constant monitoring of different aspects of cardiac/renal decline. I retired 3 years ago after 56 years as a perfusionist. Please get those sore throats checked out. Please check on that little one who keeps coughing and might be running an intermittent fever. You might be sparing them a lifetime of suffering.
My heart breaks for Miss LeHand. She did a magnifique job given her physical limitations. Excellent and well documented biography. Worth your time!

Helen Mirren is such a treasure. I LOVE to hear her narrate all these historic videos that involve women. She demands attention.

Why would Elenor want to stay on the boat with Missy and her husband, she understood who her husband preferred and it wasn’t her. Don’t judge her for not staying on the boat where she was not wanted.

The movie Hyde Park on Hudson covers some of this.

Eleanor Roosevelt may not have been ready psychologically to take care of a disabled husband. She might have been disappointed, even shattered by FDR’s disabilities. I also think polio may have removed any trace of romantic feelings toward her husband. She was the one who introduced Missy to FDR. Although I may believe that there was no romantic relationship between Missy and FDR, I am convinced that Missy filled up a void that Eleanor’s lack of sustained wifely presence may have created. Eleanor was very much involved in politics, yet Missy had more influence.
In fact, Eleanor was an extremely busy White House pillar during the long-lived FDR Presidency. The documentary does not render justice to the extraordinary work of Eleanor as a First Lady, in general, but also in terms of her support to both the NAACP and women’s issues, both controversial at the time. An advocate for Civil Rights, Eleanor joined the NAACP in 1936, and she also helped pave the way for NOW (the National Organization of Women), in advocating for women’s equality and activism. She helped make civil rights and women’s issues an integral part of FDR’s New Deal. I am sorry that the documentary does not draw on that either because it could have helped explain “Eleanor’s blessing”, how she allowed Missy to become so important for FDR’s well-being.
