If a ranger says it’s not a good idea, then heed the advice. It’s not worth your life.

Only having a plan A without any alternatives is also a recipe for disaster.

Sadly, Jerry was under repaired. A toy compass. Not enough water and food . An inadequate map...No GPS

Going beyond and violating a trail closure sign is a gurantee for trouble, with possible outcomes being injury, losing the trail and death.

I've been an idiot, unprepared and inexperienced, in the desert. I wasn't going far, maybe three miles, and I grew up there. 🙄
So I put on my flip flops, (yes, flip flops) grabbed the dog, and walked out the door. At least it wasn't hot and I only got turned around once.
I learned my lesson and followed 'the rules' after that. More importantly, the dog was fine.

I grew up near the boundary of a National Forest where Boy Scout troops frequently became lost on hikes. My parents were not impressed with the so-called leadership on those hikes and would not have allowed my brother and me to go on Scout hikes had either one of us wanted to be a Scout. Neither of us was interested in joining a Scout troop. We grew up doing hardcore hiking and backpacking in very remote locations with seasoned outdoorsmen. It's decades later and I still hike. I've never experienced a single mishap.

Exceeding your experience & training level is a recipe for disaster.

As a longtime hiker, backpacker, and remote-road explorer, what I don't understand about many of the stories covered on this channel is why people don't simply turn back. Is it a matter of summit fever? When I encounter sketchy trail/road, weather or wildlife conditions, I turn around and reverse course -- no matter how much I want to continue on and reach my planned destination. My intended destination will always be there for a future attempt.

Gerry and her journey hit my soul deeply. You can be the best hiking with lots of experience but don't matter because things can happen that you may never expect and that is the danger and at that age you should be home with family and enjoy life not trying to adventure in the wild, but everyone is different. For me getting lost even driving with my Google maps that I don't trust 100% is a nervous trauma, but if I see people I always can ask where to go when Google is taking me to LA la land somewhere nobody knows. Keep me mind adventure is a risk not knowing things can happen even if you think you are the best, because even the best fail too.

Outdoor Disasters: I watched all the stories, many of them caused me to tear up, especially the one about the AT--Inchworm--her knickname for the trail. She reminds me of my best friend at church, who is also a nurse and travels all over the world with her husband. They do amazing things to help others. Inchworm sounds like an amazing person--and it made me cry thinking about her. As for the other stories, they also brought me to tears. I felt so sorry for the boyscouts who got lost and died trying so hard to save themselves. I was touched by their memorials. I was glad for the hiker that almost walked out on his own accord, humble enough to stop and allow others to finally help him. I hope he married his sweetheart, finally realizing he is a worthy person. Thank you for sharing their stories, very touching. I pray for the families that lost loved ones, hoping that they have been able to go on and remember the good things about their loved ones. VERY Good video!!

I am home sick in bed with Covid--and this really got my attention and distracted me from my symptoms--I am running a nasty fever too. So I needed this today. God bless you for your work. Michelle Reed, Gresham Oregon USA
