  I am a bricklayer (37yrs) on the trowel.... worked all over Europe and US.... the US standard  is crazy poor.... paper shacks ....

  the red pencil is called a Zimmerman-pencil (carpenter-pencil), it is abour 10" and shaped with a knife, plus it is oval, so when put somewhere it can't roll and drop to the ground. Make's sense when working in the attic

  The reason for that roof extension over the front door is to prevent accumulated snow from falling on anyone using the front door.

  Our house in Germany is 400 years old. It&apos;s cool in Summer and cozy and warm in Winter -you can still find the craftsmen/women who can repair and restore these old houses.

  The gutters are usually separate from the roof tiles. Fun fact about the topping out ceremony: the man next to the home owners up in the scaffolding is wearing the traditional clothing of his craftsmanship. It is kind of like a ceremonial traditional uniform that is still often worn to work by traveling journeymen or during occasions like this.

  To answer this one question of yours: I have singlehandedly replaced several roof tiles on the roof of my own house. Some kinds of tiles are easier to replace than others - but it can definitely be done by one single person in a few minutes (a person, of course who doesn&apos;t suffer from vertigo).<br>The gutters are separate and made out of metal. Formerly copper, these days rather tin or something cheaper.
