  He lost her. He knows his part. And regrets it. He wants to see her (The Eyes) but he knows he lost her for good (Without a face).The title is borrow from French fiction but the metaphor is not literal.  “Hard to get release”. Here he admits that he cannot let go. Then the  Eva’s and psychedelic triip. He tries to distract the memory.  It does not work. “Reading murder books, trying to stay hip” No matter how hard he tries he cannot find the internal self he felt with her. He must live without the face - with the memory of her only. This cannot be reversed. He will never be the same again.
