Why Most Christians Don't Fast (But Should) | Matthew 6:16-18 | Bible Study (EP 14)

If you can't tell your body no when it comes to food, what makes you think you'll be able to tell your flesh no when lust, pride, temptation, or sin shows up? That's one reason fasting may be far more important to your spiritual life than you realize. Christian fasting is one of the most overlooked spiritual disciplines in the church today. In this Bible study, we're breaking down what Jesus actually taught about fasting in Matthew 6:16–18—and why He said WHEN you fast,” not “IF you fast.” What is the true purpose of fasting? What counts as a biblical fast? Why should Christians fast? And what does denying yourself food have to do with overcoming lust, pride, temptation, and other desires of the flesh? We get into all of it. In this study, we discuss: • What Jesus taught about fasting • Why Christians should fast • The purpose of biblical fasting • Absolute, normal, and partial fasts • Individual vs. corporate fasting • Why fasting shouldn't be done for attention • How fasting teaches you to deny your flesh • The connection between fasting and self-control • What it means for your stomach to become your “god” • How fasting can strengthen your spiritual discipline • How often Christians should fast One of the biggest questions from this study is simple: If you can't turn away the plate, how will you learn to turn away the other desires of your flesh? Fasting isn't about proving how spiritual you are to other people. Jesus specifically warned against that. It's about what happens between you and God when you're willing to deny your flesh and seek Him. 📖 SCRIPTURES COVERED Matthew 6:16–18 — Jesus' teaching on fasting Philippians 3:18–19 — “Their god is their stomach” Galatians 5 — The fruit of the Spirit and self-control Proverbs 23:20–21 — Warning against excess Esther — Corporate fasting in a time of crisis Daniel — The biblical example discussed in connection with a partial fast Jonah — Nineveh's response of fasting, repentance, and turning from sin Moses — Fasting during his encounter with God If this Bible study helped you understand fasting differently, *LIKE the video, COMMENT your biggest takeaway, and SUBSCRIBE* for more Bible studies as we continue walking through the Sermon on the Mount. 👇 QUESTION FOR YOU: How has fasting impacted your relationship with God?
