"Fusion is a horror game that is at it's weakest when it's trying to be an action game, Dread is an action game that is at it's weakest when it's trying to be a horror game" - couldn't have said it any better, another banger Darkfry!

As weird as it sounds, I don't think Dread is trying to be a "horror" game, at least not in the same way that Fusion does its horror bits with the SA-X. Dread is much more about tension and anxiety, and I think the best comparison there is Alien Isolation, which is another non-linear "horror" game that operates in a very similar way (an unkillable enemy who can instantly kill you patrolling a series of areas you have to navigate through).

The EMMI, like the xenomorph in Isolation, were never going to be scary for the whole experience. The game just goes on for too long and the general gameplay loop involves them almost certainly repeatedly killing the player on a first playthrough, which removes a lot of the "fear" from the question of "what will happen to me if I'm caught?" Instead, it's about maintaining that sense of tension and anxiety; putting the player under constant stress and forcing them to make snap second judgments that are the difference between life and death. And I think that's what Dread excels at (which makes the name a misnomer maybe but eh).

You don’t get the emmi, they are supposed to cause a sense of dread and are machines that are stuck to one area on purpose

if you don't die once or twice when you're fighting a Boss For the First Time, The Boss needs to be harder. any action Bass video game needs to be difficult enough to actually force you to change your strategy and he's actually strong enough to kill you.

34:42 Joe! I had literally given up at this point cause I didn’t know there was a run button. It was like weeks later i was complaining to a friend and she told me just told the run button and was like “THERES A EFFING RUN BUTTON!!!” My only Metroidvania at that point was Symphony of the night

"We can finally talk about Metroid Dread, and how it is in almost every way, Fusion's complete antithesis." THANK YOU

I've not finished watching yet, but this drove me wild every time I saw people say it was the perfect follow up to Fusion and did what it did better.

Also, for the security robot in Fusion, it doesn't help much after the fact but you can hang from the ceiling and fire at it diagonally so you don't have to be directly above it.

i never understood why people had problems with fusion’s boss fights when i was breezing through them at age 9, if anything i thought they were too easy

Of note, you aren't guaranteed to encounter an EMMI when you enter their Zone. But the point still stands in that you aren't really under threat outside of the Zones.
