Canada is looking to Europe and the rest of the world for new trading partners — but why haven't we finished building a truly free market inside Canada? More than $527 BILLION in goods and services already moves between Canada's provinces and territories every year, supporting approximately 1.6 million Canadian jobs. Yet regulatory differences, licensing requirements, certifications and other internal trade barriers can still make it harder and more expensive for Canadians to do business with other Canadians. At the same time, Canada is looking to diversify beyond the United States, deepen economic relationships with Europe and use its reputation for stability, predictability and trust to attract investment, manufacturing, technology, critical-mineral development and good-paying Canadian jobs. But international relationships only matter if they eventually pass one test: THE KITCHEN TABLE TEST. Does it create jobs? Increase incomes? Lower unnecessary costs? Make Canadian families more financially secure? Because Canadians are still facing mortgage-renewal pressure, elevated household debt, housing-market weakness and a cost of living that is stretching household cash flow. Canada's economic strategy can't just be about Donald Trump, tariffs or finding another country to sell to. It also has to be about productivity, investment, interprovincial trade, Canadian businesses, jobs and making Canada a country the world wants to do business with — and one Canadians can still afford to live in. Round One: Put the elbows down. Round Two: Get back to the negotiating table. ROUND THREE: Build relationships abroad. Remove barriers at home. Make both work for Canadians.
