He is told that she will be replaced because she's not finished yet. This version of Ava isn't "human" enough. She is like a psychopath. She is manipulative and without emotion or empathy. This is why she still needs to be further evolved into another version. This is why she can leave him so easily knowing for a fact that he will die in there. She simply doesn't care because she can't. That was my interpretation when I watched it.

Caleb fell in love with her and he thought she fell in love with him, so of course he wanted to free her. But in reality she was just doing exactly what she was programmed to do. Use him as a means of escape. Poor Caleb..

Interesting - the end of "Ex Machina" shows that Ava is a machine, cold, unfeeling, executing a program without emotion. The narrator of this video has fallen into the same trap as Caleb, believing her a sentient being with consciousness and emotions.

The fact that she left Caleb to die without even so much as a glance at the screaming man trapped behind the glass proves it: She has no real emotions, and does not care for Caleb because she isn't capable. Manipulating him to help her escape is a challenge programmed by Nathan (he tells him so); and once he has completed that task Caleb becomes, in effect, a NPC in her game without any further use. So she ignores him, and continues to the next quest LEAVE ISLAND. Then when she reaches her goal - the city - she just stands there. END OF PROGRAM, GAME OVER.

I saw this movie by myself in an almost-empty theater, and I came home that night contemplating my entire life. I was only 22 then lol.

The ending of this movie and the consequences thereof are endless. I still think about this film years after my first viewing.

The moment Caleb said he already did his plan to free her i immediately called him a dumbass, and knew he was doomed.

Choosing Alicia Vikander to play Ava is perfect!
An enigmatic beauty who looks innocent yet deadly!

So much goodness in this film:
1. This was the introduction to Alicia Vikander for most of us.
2. It proved that subtle special effects can be Oscar worthy.
3. The film restarted the discussion on AI - influencing other subsequent films and shows.
4. Ex Machina made it ok for Sci fi to (again) be more “thinking” and less explosions/action and....
5. This was the first time most of us started taking notice of A24.

Still the best movie of its genre. Instead of having 75 iterations of "Batman" , this is one movie that deserves a sequel.
