This is from the musical Kristina from Duvemåla, written by Björn and Benny from ABBA. It’s based on a book about swedes who emigrated to America in the 1800s. By this time in history, Sweden is poor and people starve. The church is strong and not very friendly and labour laws don’t exist. When their child dies, the emigrate in hopes of a better life (1/5 of the population did this). Kristina is homesick, scared and a bit lost in the new country. Here she just had a miscarriage and the doctor says she must never get pregnant again (no more sx), bc then she might die. She feels abandoned by God, and doubt his existence - a thought that never before has crossed her mind.

It's not a folk song! It's from a musical performance!

Helen really commited to this performance! She didn't just sing the song, she became Kristina and expressed those raw emotions in words, voice and body language! She makes it seem like she's talking directly to the god she's so fearful might not exist, unaware that there are any other people nearby, up until the audience applause!

As a Swede who cries every time she hears this song, it's really cool to see people from another country get just as moved. There is something about her voice and the passion behind that is just incredibly touching.

This is a big thing in Swedish history. Many moved from Sweden after bad seasons where most farming just did not give enough crops. People were desperate, poor and sick or starving. They thought that moving to America would solve everything and just be like a magical wonderful new place. Many ads for those boat-trips were sold like that. Some people could only afford to send one person from their family and many families were split because of this.

And after a horrible boat-journey from Sweden to America where many died they ended up in a untouched place that was literally a wild west. Many just did not survive when they got there but some did. Many thought they could just find a bunch of gold and get rich immediately but that was far from the truth.

So yeah this is very emotional stuff.

This is from the musical "Kristina from Duvemåla". Which is based on a famous book series about Swedes who emigrated to America in the 19th century. Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA wrote the lyrics and he is actually an atheist.
