Seeing this is 5 years old now, I'm sure you have learned that you never switch the white wire...only the black wire. (Your neutrals always run uninterrupted to the fixture) hi

Yes, ground... especially with water. .... A/c .. alternating current. Never backwards. I have found the next heavier gauge extension cord works well for cords.

It's an A/C motor it will not run backwards but the case maybe on the hot side of power.

Why didn,t you connect the ground to the motor also you should put the swhich on the hot side..
