Detective story "The Donnington Affair" | Gilbert Keith Chesterton, which can be listened to in the background, without being distracted from your work. In the October 1914 issue of the British magazine "Premier", Sir Max Pemberton published the first part of this story, inviting a number of writers, including Chesterton, to use their talents to solve the described murder mystery. Chesterton's solution appeared in the November issue in the form of another story about Father Brown. Since Max Pemberton died much later than Chesterton, the legal nuances of copyright have led to the fact that today only Chesterton's part is published in the open access and free online libraries. Therefore, before moving on to the original text of Chesterton, I will introduce you to a brief summary of Pemberton's missing plot, so that you can understand all the details of the crime. So: 🏡 Setting and characters The story is told from the perspective of John Barrington Cope, a young Anglican priest in the parish of Borrow-in-the-Vale. He is engaged to Harriet Donnington. Harriet's family lives in a gloomy, isolated old estate of Borrow Close under the strict control of his despotic father, Sir Borrow Donnington. After the death of his wife, Sir Borrow has practically turned the house into a medieval closed fortress. His two daughters live with him: Harriet and her sister Evelyn. There is also a faithful, though not very insightful servant, Wellman, on the estate. There is a big secret in the family - Sir Borrow's son, Southby Donnington, who has gone down a criminal path, forged financial documents and is serving a sentence in a penal colony. The father disowned his son and erased him from his life. 🚨 The plot and the build-up to the mystery Events begin to develop rapidly when news reaches the estate: Southby has escaped from prison. Moreover, he escaped not alone, but with another dangerous convict named Mester. At the same time, another character appears on the estate - Captain Kennington, who is courting Evelyn. Evelyn behaves extremely nervously, feigns illness, and Cope notices that she seems to have learned about her brother's escape much earlier than others. To protect Harriet from family scandal and stress, she is hastily sent to her relatives in the city of Bath. 🩸 Crime and mysterious evidence The night after Harriet's departure, a tragedy occurs at the Borrow Close estate. Priest Cope, Sir Borrow and servant Wellman find Evelyn Donnington dead in one of the tower rooms. She was fatally stabbed in the throat. At the scene of the crime, Pemberton leaves the following confusing evidence: Yellow goatskin glove: A yellow glove was found next to the body, inside which were wrapped 9 gold coins. This glove is Captain Kennington's trademark, he always wears exactly these. Secret room: The door to the "Clergyman's Room" (a secret hiding place during the times of religious persecution, hidden in the wall of the tower) is wide open. It is empty, although Southby, apparently, was hiding there. Disappearance of brother: Southby Donnington disappeared from the estate immediately after the murder. Kennington's strange behavior: Captain Kennington claims that he arrived in the evening, but after hearing some story from Evelyn, he went to spend the night in a hotel in the city, so he does not know anything. The first part of Pemberton ends in a complete dead end. The police have blocked all the roads, are searching the forests, but there is no clue. Who is the murderer? The fugitive Southby? His partner Mester? The infatuated Captain Kennington? Or one of the residents of the house? Pemberton begs: “God, send us enlightenment so that the guilty person is punished!”. __________________________________________________________ You can support the channel and the voice acting of new books using the links below: PRIVATE https://www.privat24.ua/send/21bcq PayPal - [email protected] Or to a bank card: 4149 6293 7062 5865 – PRIVATE buymeacoffee - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Literary...
