If you liked this video, consider watching my follow-up video about ANOTHER messed up visual novel!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdDmDXxGH2U

But anyways...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Thank you all so much for watching! I don't really do videos like this very often and I'm blown away by the unexpected support! I've been reading all of the comments and its just been a joy to see people genuinely engage with my takes and analysis here- especially people bringing up genuine disagreement.

That being said, I have gotten a lot of comments from people who are big fans of the VN and eroges in general that really dislike my analysis, and I want to make something very clear here-- I would not be making this video if I truly believed that Saya no Uta was worthless garbage. This game means a lot to me and was genuinely impactful, and regardless of my issues with it, I really wanted to do this game justice with this video.

This game, at the end of the day, was always going to be an erotic game. I still think that the game is deeply flawed IN the way it handles and depicts abuse, but I understand why people are mad that I'm projecting my morals onto it. Still, I stand by the points I made in my video, its still wrong for the game to be written the way that is was, and its still wrong to try and justify it just because the game has artistic nuance.

I'm not the best critic in the world and this is the first time I've really made a video like this on such a serious and nuanced piece of media, so I hope you can forgive me for missing some context surrounding the game and not making the best critique of the game. I really tried to be nuanced with my analysis of the game, and if it wasn't up to par or inaccurate, I am genuinely really sorry. Again, I wouldn't bother making this video if this game wasn't impactful or meaningful to me in any way- call this a flawed love letter to the game, or me just crashing out, but please don't think I'm just blindly hating on the game.

I deeply appreciate all of you taking the time to comment and share your thoughts, and I hope regardless that you all enjoyed the video. Thanks for sticking around, and I hope to see you all again very soon! -1KD

A note about the mention of the book Lolita towards the end of the video. It is widely known that the author, Vladimir Nabokov, was most likely abused by a male relative as a child and that because of this books such as Lolita were written. In addition it is known that Nabokov attempted to burn early drafts of Lolita seemingly out of fear that the public would not understand it as what he wrote it as: The story of a malicious man who remains as an unreliable narrator and the tragedy of Dolores Haze. Whilst Saya no Uta may have been written with malicious intentions Lolita was not and has since been widely misinterpreted or twisted by the very public Nabokov feared. He even refused to have depictions of young girls or stylized imagery on the first covers of Lolita, preferring abstract, symbolic, or plain covers in contrast to the blatantly misrepresentative covers of many editions today.

there's another layer to this story that's really disturbing to me particularly. having bartonella can trigger hallucinations that make the world fleshy, moving flesh nightmare acid trip, of beings and veins and meat. the idea of a botched surgery causing the world to look that way seems extremely plausible knowing this, which makes this way more terrifying.

The book "Lolita" Was not written by Nabokov to sexualize a child, he spent a long long while researching abuse to actually show the crime from the actor's words, not even the perception, the words, the narrator lies and you can tell if you look closely Enough
Though the movies later filmed do just sexualize the child actively against Nabokov's requests and protests, Dolores wasn't supposed to look mature and attractive, she was a 3 or 4 feet tall boyish girl in mismatching socks
Both movies do their job at showing things from how Humbert would want to show it, but completely erases all the meaning the story was meant to serve because their directors were just creeps probably not even understanding the point of the book
If they understood it was meant to judge the actor, why would they offer to make Humbert marry Dolores to make it more digestable for public, or aging up the character and casting an actress that looks "mature and attractive" But is still a minor?

I always thought Saya purposefully made the neighbor to attack her allowing Fuminori to save her like in the romance novels she read creating a “Damsel in distress” effect, strengthening their “bond/love”.
