My boss asked if I was coming to the nomikai tonight. I said I had plans. I didn't.

Nobody would have been angry if I'd said no honestly. That's the strange part — there's no punishment, and that's exactly why it's hard to skip.

Can you say no to after-work drinks where you work?

Hi there! I only discovered your channel two days ago, but I’m already hooked. Watching your content feels like getting an intimate, authentic glimpse into the raw life of a salaryman, no flashy vlog filters, just pure sincerity.
I really love this approach, and today's video really hit home. It’s not just Japan; many neighboring Asian countries share a similar workplace drinking culture, though I feel Japan and South Korea are on a whole different level.
Personally, I absolutely despise those drinking parties, especially being pressured into them. Most of us start out as people-pleasers who struggle to say no. But over the last two years, after switching departments and changing my work environment, I've gotten much better at communicating and standing up for myself, actually speaking my mind. Now, I just prioritize myself. I’m also learning foreign languages to level up, hoping that one day I'll land a great job and reach a position where no one can force me to do anything anymore.

It's not easy to put yourself first; it truly takes practice and being kind to yourself to truly unwind. But because you did, I enjoyed your joy in this video. Thank you, and I look forward to the next one. 😊

Somehow, I have not yet followed you but I want you to know that these videos of yours are very comforting to me as someone who also works corporate. When I was much younger and a fresh graduate, I would've said yes to very nomikai (I had worked in a Japanese company in my country) but now, looking back at it, no one also would've been mad if I hadn't come. It's so difficult to choose yourself these days and I'm glad that you did. Thank you for these videos, your community is also as comforting to someone who has worked corporate for a long time.

i am SO so proud of you. you're right, balance isn't always about putting yourself first. but is it about know you CAN put yourself first. i bet you will enjoy your time with your coworkers even more if you don't always feel obligated to be there.

    Hello again Mr. Salaryman!

This is something I can understand fully. I work nights and my coworkers are some of the few people that share similar time off to myself. I often find it a struggle to tell them know and take time for myself to spend with friends instead. My coworkers can be my friends, but when I'm not at work, I sometimes would rather spend time away from them.

Hello Mr Ichiran, nice to see another video, i prepared some ramen to eat along side this video :), isn't it amazing how food can give us a moment of silence and peace away from all the stress of daily live. In my country there isnt exactly a nomikai, but there is a lot of (heavy) drinking after work or after school which most people see as normal, you are not expected to join, but sometimes it will be frowned upon if you don't. But honestly is think that it is good to say no sometimes and prioritize that balance, i often take time alone to eat or do other activites at night instead of going out with friends or colleagues and it gives me time to relax and think stuff over which is good in the long term i think.
