  The elephant in the classroom is the increase in the number of kids with learning disabilities (referred as inclusion). One student with behavioral issues, or ADHD, or a learning disability of some sort is equal to having 3 extra students in a class. Teachers cannot expect to teach a lesson to a group of 28 students if 5 to 8 of the class come in with learning needs and challenging behavioral profiles. Burnt out teachers equal sick teachers.

  My wife, after teaching full time for 25 years, became a substitute teacher as workloads are too high for low pay

  Nobody wants to go into teaching...no consequences, no zeroes, no discipline...I retired after 32 years of teaching high school. Stop blaming this pandemic nonsense.

  How about not have a metric to know how many teachers we need nationally, or how many teachers we are training nationally. The metric they use is vacancies. What about the high cost of living and the expectation that education students pay thousands sometimes 10’s of thousands of dollars to work within the schools for months only to be dismissed for trivial reasons forcing them to give up or wait till next year to try again.

  I have a visitor visa in Canada so I was there last year. I would like to immigrate there and work in a school in Ottawa. I am open to becoming a  teacher in preschool, kindergarten or elementary or as a teacher assistant/teacher aide/childcare worker/ tutor. I can also be a teacher aide in high school.

  Canada's following the path of the USA.  You're not there yet, but this is how it starts.  You are  underfunding education.  Now teachers are leaving.  There isn't a TRUE shortage, just a shortage of people willing to be overworked and underpaid in a system that's underfunded and set up to fail.  Give it 20 years, and Maple Maga will take over.  Teacher in the U.S. here, and have been in education for 26, going on 27 years.  Have been speaking up about it almost as long.  But the powers that be DO. NOT. LISTEN.  Be warned... the authoritarians will be coming for you as the poorly educated fall for the lies of the populist leader who will exploit the opportunity.  Orange LIES matter. SUPPORT EDUCATION before it's too late.

  Yeah they say there is a teacher shortage, but I’m having a hell of a time getting into my local district on Vancouver Island. I’ve applied about 5 times and can’t even get someone to call me to set up an interview, even with great references and practical reports. But, if you know the right people you’ll get in, no problem. A couple people I graduated with have parents who are teachers in our district and they basically got jobs right out of graduation. While the rest of us either have to work outside the district and commute, move to a new town or city, or give up teaching all together. Admins say there’s a shortage, but are too lazy to hire people. Teaching has become too political. It’s not about the passion of educating kids anymore. It’s just a mess.

  Definitely has nothing to do with the unsustainable 500,000 immigrants we bring in each year. Every sector is hurting because of it, no one seems to want to talk about it though.

  The problem is  parents and voters blaming teachers of being "woke" and then feel the need to punish teachers for actually doing what they are supposed to do.  Everyone one blaming problems on "woke" are the problem.
