  For those new to growing Clematis in their garden my suggestion is to start with Clematis Jackmanii. It is very easy to grow and maintain annually. Clematis like their roots to be shaded while their growth gets adequate sun daily so it will flower at its appropriate time. Cut your C. Jackmanii back in February to 12” above the ground. Be sure to add compost around its base 8”-10” away from where it is growing at its base. Gently trowel in that compost into existing soil. Then add a 1” layer of Bark Fines on top of that. Don’t’ disturb the plant itself. Don’t smother it in mulch. Just provide a blanket of cover to put it to bed for Winter. In Spring when I see new growth on my Clematis Jackmanii I gently move its winter blanket back to form a shallow trough around it about the size of a large dinner plate. I will add an organic bloom booster fertilizer at that time too to the top 1” of surrounding soil. It starts flowering in early July for me and it’s prolific with gorgeous dark velvety purple flowers. My Clematis Jackmanii is 15 years old in my garden. The large rock that I placed 12” from its base helps to keep it roots shaded and cool. I deep water all of my Clematis, not relying on my sprinklers for the deep roots that have developed over their long lives. I keep Bark Fines on the soils surface all year round to help the plant stay hydrated and cool at its roots. The foliage likes the moisture as well. Not soggy wet people, just moist! I’ve never had even one problem with any of my Clematis. <br>Also very important: I add a little more flower burst organic fertilizer when it begins blooming. My Clematis loves this step and puts on a beautiful show of abundant flowers. I do have other perennials planted next to this Clematis that flower at different times in this garden. They also shade the roots of this Clematis. <br>If you want healthy Clematis the info here is very good. Please read first about how to plant a Clematis. Don’t just dig a hole and shove it into the ground! If you plant it too deeply it will not survive. Set it into the appropriate size hole, with good amended soil according to the condition of what you are working with in your garden and back fill the soil to its base so your plant is sitting at the same height as the soil in its Nursery container. Do not bury its crown. <br>There is very good gardening info on the internet to help anyone be successful in growing these beautiful vining perennials. Do your homework!
