I went through the Mersey Tunnel in September 1939 just a few days before WW2 started. At least I assume so because I have the tickets my mother saved and I was born in January 1940.  So I travelled in the comfort of my mother's womb. Not been through since :)

My grandad helped build the later tunnel but then went on to work in the stations inside the tunnel you have gone through. He would pop his head out and wave to my mum as she passed on the bus on her way home from working in Liverpool. He also worked as the lifeguard along seacombe to new Brighton prom. He was only 5ft 3 and captain in the commandos in WW2. Apparently he was bare knuckle boxing champ of Wallasey (underground of course). Wish I’d have listened as a kid to the stories. He would have known what that  mercury flashy thingy is all about. He worked on the construction of the Liverpool beacon aswell and after a hard days work he stopped for a quiet pint and ended up throwing some young thugs out of the pub in new Brighton because they were swearing in front of ladies. Their names were Paul, John and George… ringo hadnt joined the band yet. I remember my mum and him telling me he made his famous peawack soup for Paul macartneys parties. When the Queen and Prince Phillip went to open the tunnel my nan said he winked at her as they drove past their house  😅. My great granddad and later my uncle worked on the ferries for years.  A lot of history there for my family and should take a tour and see what my good old grandad Jack actually worked on rather than just driving through and moaning about the toll. Thanks for sharing, got me going back in time there for a minute. 🫡

Reusing the old potential tramway as a tramway would be a great plan. There's even two disused tunnels to use as access! It's clearly meant to be!

Excellent video Interesting with some good historical research. It was a bugbear of my mother, born in Liverpool 1928, that they never lived up to their promise that the Queensway Tunnel would be free to use after the debt was paid off.

My parents walked through the tunnel just before it opened.<br>I used to enjoy cycling through the tunnel at night in the 1950s and 60s
