  I hope you guys understand what all of this means to us.  I think many of us who have lived our entire lives in Michigan take a lot of it for granted, and your journey is an inspiration to really look around and recognize what an incredible state we live in.

  From someone who lives on the island, PLEASE still look both ways before crossing the street! You'd be surprised how many people still don't hear the horses or the bikes. Even if there's no cars, there's still lots of traffic on main street

  This island is a "national historic landmark" and has a rich history.   Fort Mackinac was actually built in 1780-1781 by the British during the American Revolution.  The fort was established so that its heavy cannons could control the critical Straits of Mackinac which was the main military waterway and trade route connecting Lake Michigan with Lake Huron.  If you controlled this strategic strait, you controlled troop movements and the entire fur trade in the Americas which was millions of dollars.  The Battle of Mackinac Island occurred in 1814 and the British controlled the island until 1815 when the Treaty of Ghent returned it to the USA after The War of 1812.   I am a proud citizen of Michigan, and have been to this beautiful quiet serene place many times.  It's hard to imagine so many British and American soldiers dying here over two hundred years ago.
