Then there's a knock, and behind the holy bishop stands a dark figure with a rod, a sack, and a sooty face. Today, Knecht Ruprecht is a spooky figure amidst the cookies and presents. But he is precisely the one who reveals that our ancestors' celebration was not the earlier version of ours. The chronicler begins in Rome. The Saturnalia briefly reversed the order of events. In the calendar compiled for Rome in the fourth century, the birthday of the unconquered sun and the celebration of Christ's birth appear side by side. This proves that the two dates were once concurrent. It doesn't prove that a bishop stole a sun festival one morning. A date is not a confession. North of the Alps, things get even more chaotic. Bede wrote in the early eighth century about months he called Giuli—a winter reckoning, not a script for a German Christmas room. The detailed account of King Haakon's postponed Yule festival is found in Snorri Sturluson, who wrote in the thirteenth century. This makes it a medieval memory, not a record from the royal hall. And Ruprecht himself? He has no birth certificate. In the Alps, Krampus figures appear; elsewhere, Pelznickel, Belsnickel, or Schmutzli. Names, clothing, and roles vary from place to place. Anyone who draws an unbroken line from this to a pre-Christian god reveals more about a longing for origins than about the sources. His mutability is the real finding. For the companion was never simply the enemy of the festival. He made the gift understandable: a gift alongside a rod signifies a test, not merely generosity. Later, the Reformation, the bourgeois living room, and the consumer world shifted the stage once again. Santa Claus was easily marketed.
