What an intriguing portrait of Kenneth Williams, - that close-up as he listens intently to the tenor singing.

What an incredible programme. Never saw it at the time, and speaks volumes for the wonderfully eccentric way in which BBC approached entertainment in those days. Sophisticated talk and humour not afraid to include bawdy smut from Kenneth Williams. If only the BBC and other channels had the wit and wisdom to do this type of show today, but it would be totally lost on today's generation.

Don’t like the AI. Don’t like AI, full stop. Love Kenneth Williams - still. Probably he didn’t realize how much loved he was. I pray he does now!

Kenneth Williams was a wonderful raconteur, engaging, highly intelligent, articulate and naturally funny. In his diaries, Kenny briefly discusses this appearance and says how much he adored Germaine and found her to be funny, intelligent, and very alluring. He speaks less highly of Maria Aitken who he felt put him down slightly during the interview, although i tend to disagree with him regarding Maria's attitude towards him here.

Lovely to be reminded of how the BBC was before it was dumbed down

Maria could never imagine here in 1984 that her brother Jonathan would be thrown in jail 15 years later.

The program found a way of drawing stories out from these raconteurs that they don't usually tell. Showing some different qualities of themselves. Maybe that was the point. Like Williams even telling stories that don't end with a joke, a punchline; that end with a poignant note instead. And to see him immersed in music ... How interesting, to learn more about these significant people in these ways, by a TV programme just doing something different
