The Word of Life Mission (Korea Baptist Convention) delivers the Word of God to all people around the world.
At this September 2026 Mothers' Monthly Meeting, we took time to meditate on the "Miracle of the Widow's Jar of Oil" recorded in 2 Kings 4:1–7, reflecting on the mindset Christians should have when relying on and obeying God in the face of life's hardships and difficult problems.
We hope you will witness God's great power and abundant grace when, amidst the suffering we face, we go before God in supplication instead of resentment, and offer even the smallest things in obedience to His Word.
[Sermon Summary]
1. A Life of Taking Refuge in God Instead of Resentment Amidst Suffering
Even believers who serve God faithfully may experience unexpected hardships and difficulties in life.
When faced with difficulties, instead of falling into complaints or resentment, you must go before God and His Word to seek help.
"Foolishness twists his way, and in his heart he blames the Lord." (Proverbs 19:3)
"How great is the grace you have stored up for those who fear you, the grace you have bestowed upon those who take refuge in you before the eyes of mankind!" (Psalm 31:19)
2. Offering What You Have with Gratitude
All that remained in the woman's house was a tiny jar of oil, but when she confessed exactly what was there and obeyed, a miracle began.
Rather than focusing on our own weaknesses or shortcomings, we need a life of remembering God's grace already granted and offering even what is small with gratitude.
3. Obedience of Faith Beyond Human Reason and the Measure of the Vessel
When we obey even a command that is difficult to understand, simply because it is the Word of God, we come to see God's work.
The oil filled up to the extent that empty vessels were prepared, and when there were no more vessels, the oil stopped. The size of the vessels signifies the 'measure of our faith and obedience.'
For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).
"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt; open your mouth wide, and I will fill it" (Psalm 81:10).
4. God's Requirement for Our Happiness and Blessings
God requires obedience from His saints in order to bestow upon them the happiness they deserve and even more abundant blessings. What does the LORD your God require of you, O Israel? That you fear the LORD your God, walk in all His ways, love Him, serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD which I command you today for your happiness? (Deuteronomy 10:12-13)
[Scripture]
One of the wives of the prophet’s disciples cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant, my husband, is dead. You know that your servant feared the LORD. Now the creditor has come and wants to take my two children and make them his servants.” Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me what you have in your house.” She said, “There is nothing in your house but a jar of oil.” He said, “Go out and borrow vessels from all your neighbors. Borrow empty vessels, but do not borrow just a few. Then you and your two sons go in, close the door, and pour oil into all the vessels, and as they fill, set them aside.” So the woman went away and closed the door with her two sons, and they brought the vessels to him. Then he poured it out, and the vessel was full. The woman said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” The son said, “I have no other vessel.” Immediately the oil stopped. The woman went to the man of God and told him, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay off your debt, and with what is left, you and your two sons live.” (2 Kings 4:1-7)
